Tips To Prepare Yourself For This Frigid Winter Weather
If you woke up this morning thinking this is the coldest you can remember, just wait another 24 hours because it is supposed to get worse.
Tuesday’s forecast has temperatures dipping below 10 degrees, and there are many businesses and schools that have not only kept their doors closed today but are planning to do so tomorrow, too. In these dangerously low temperatures neighborhoods lose power, traveling becomes more difficult with black ice on the road, not to mention the consequences that come with being exposed to the extreme cold.
What You Need In Your Home
- flashlight or battery powered lantern
- battery powered radio
- non-electric can opener
- rock salt
What You Need To Do To Your Home
- Get the chimney inspected and flue cleaned
- Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector
- Insulate water lines along your exterior walls
- Add weather stripping to insulate doors and windows
- Make sure there is adequate shelter for pets if they are outside
What You Need To Do To Your Car
- Have the radiator serviced
- Replace windshield washer fluid with a wintertime mixture
- Replace any worn tires; check tire pressure
- Keep your gas tank near full to avoid ice in the fuel lines
- Equip your car with blanks, booster cables, a bag of sand, a tire repair kit and a flashlight
And While You’re Outdoors…
- Wear a hat, scarf, long sleeves that are snug at the wrist and mittens – which are warmer than gloves.
- Speaking of clothing, as you layer keep in mind that wool, silk and polypropylene hold more heat.
- Caffeinated drinks and alcohol may cause your body to lose heat more rapidly.
- Infants lose body heat more easily than adults. They cannot make body heat by shivering.
- Hypothermia can even happen at temperatures around the 40 degree mark if you are chilled from rain or sweat. (And just in case you haven’t seen this week’s forecast, the thermometer isn’t supposed to pass 40 until Friday).
- Frostbite is caused by the freezing of tissue. To treat, immerse the affected area in warm – not hot – water.
Finally, it just may help to stay focused on the weekend, when temperatures are expected back in the 60s.
