ATLANTA (WAOK)-This morning with guest host Vernon Jones, WAOK broke historic ground with the first interview between former DeKalb CEO Jones and embattled suspended DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis.
Ellis was indicted by a DeKalb grand jury back in June on charges he illegally pressured contractors into giving him campaign contributions. The 15-count indictment includes 14 felonies which could send Ellis to prison if he is convicted of the charges.
Ellis has always maintained he is innocent of any wrongdoing. At the time of his arrest, Ellis told reporters, “I’ve done nothing wrong as I’ve said from the very beginning. Done nothing wrong and I would never, ever, ever do anything to violate the public trust,” he said.
Ellis repeated that statement today. He is charged with extortion and other felonies for soliciting campaign contributions from business owners under threat. He was suspended from office by Governor Nathan Deal in July following the recommendation of a three person panel.
This is the first time that the two men have spoken about the case publicly together. If you missed the conversation we have it here.
Ellis is scheduled to go on trial in 2014.
