ATLANTA (WAOK)-Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson will join Vice President Joe Biden in a tour of the Panama Canal over the next two days.  The waterway is being expanded to accommodate  a new generation of mega-sized cargo ships.

Georgia officials want to deepen the Savannah River Channel to be able to receive these same vessels. The state is seeking federal money to pay for the project.  Mayor Reed said the 652-million dollar project will fuel the state’s economy and the economic growth of Savannah.

In September Georgia Governor Nathan Deal also toured the Panama Canal to get a better understanding of the process to deepen the channel.
