Police: Georgia Man Seen In Video Accidentally Burning His Wife Arrested
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (CBS ATLANTA) - Police say they have arrested a man seen in a viral video accidentally setting his wife on fire at a Georgia gas station.
37-year-old Austin Dawkins has been charged with reckless conduct stemming from the October 16th incident.
In the gas station surveillance video, it appears that Dawkins is playing with a cigarette lighter while fueling his truck.
He is apparently speaking to his wife, then seems to hold the flame near the gas nozzle igniting the vapor.
His wife runs away and it looks on the video as though Dawkins pulls out the nozzle from the truck, which spreads the flames.
His wife is seen catching fire and then falling down.
30-year-old Jessica Dawkins suffered second- and third-degree burns to her legs, arms, back and head.
Officials say she was treated at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and released.
Mr. Dawkins suffered minor burns to his hands.
The case is now pending before the Habersham County district attorney.
If convicted, Dawkins could face a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
