Zoo Atlanta Holds 100th Day Naming Ceremony For Twin Panda Cubs
The names of the twin Giant Panda cubs at Zoo Atlanta were revealed today in the 100th Day Naming Ceremony. The 100th Day Naming Ceremony is a milestone date in the Chinese tradition when pandas are named. The ceremony was broadcast live by Good Morning America.
Their names were among five other choices that were voted on by the public through GoodMorningAmerica.com. The winning names, Mei Lun and Mei Huan (pronounced May Loon and May Hwaan), come from the ancient Chinese idiom ”Mei Lun Mei Huan,” and has come to mean something indescribably beautiful and magnificent.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, panda fans from across the United States, zoo staff, and local schoolchildren poured in the Zoo’s Conservation Room for the unveiling of the names and to show their excitement on Good Morning America. Lun Lun a giant panda at Zoo Atlanta gave birth to the male twins on July 15, 2013. The cubs are the first giant pandas born in the U.S. since 1987.
