JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson is praising the president’s nomination of Jeh Johnson as secretary of homeland security.
Thompson, from Mississippi, is the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee. He says Johnson’s experience in counterterrorism and cyber security will be an asset for the job.
In a statement Friday, Thompson is urging the Senate to quickly confirm Johnson to succeed Janet Napolitano, who left last month to become president of the University of California system.
Johnson, whose first name is pronounced “Jay,” was previously the top lawyer for the Pentagon.
Thompson says he wants to work with Johnson to improve program effectiveness and employee morale in the Department of Homeland Security.
