Atlanta Up Close Talks Washington Navy Yard Shooting and African-American Mental Health Care
In light of the traumatic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Cynthia Mallard will be discussing issues that may have contributed to Aaron Alexis’ open fire on civilians. Aaron Alexis was a 34-year-old military contractor from Texas. On September 16th, Alexis walked onto the Washington Navy Yard with clearance and began to open fire. The shooting resulted in 12 fatalities.
Dr. Anthony Hatch and Dr. Lateefah Watford will be giving their professional opinions of the traumatic event. Dr. Anthony Hatch is a sociology professor at Georgia State Universtity here in Atlanta. He produces social research that brings to light conditions of social injustice and teaches courses in sociological theory, health and medicine, and race and inequality. Dr. Lateefah Watford is a practicing psychiatrist trained to look at the developmental stages of her patients, taking into account the social, behavioral, emotional and physiological factors.
