ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – The lawyer for Beverly Hall, the former Atlanta school superintendent indicted in the school system’s cheating scandal, says the educator has breast cancer.

Attorney Richard Deane said Thursday that Hall is receiving treatment for the condition. He said she will continue to fight the charges against her.

Hall and 34 other Atlanta educators were indicted in March in the cheating scandal.

Howard Grant, executive director of the Atlanta Board of Education, said one of them, former elementary school Principal Willie Davenport, has died. She was 66.

A state investigation in 2011 found cheating on standardized tests by nearly 180 educators in 44 Atlanta schools. Investigators say educators gave answers to students or changed answers on tests after they were turned in.
