JASPER, Ga. (CBS Atlanta) – Several area residents are facing charges, and one is already behind bars, after the group dumped the body of a young woman on the side of a road when she died during an alleged asthma attack.
According to authorities, the women did nothing to try and save the life of 20-year-old Taylor Smith. Police told WSB-TV that they found the girl lying on the side of the road near the county jail. According to her obituary on the website of the Darby Funeral Home, Smith died Aug. 29.
“She didn’t deserve just to be dumped on the side of the road, just because they didn’t know what else to do,” Holly Springs Police Lt. Tanya Smith told the station. The funeral home lists Tanya Smith as the victim’s mother.
The suspects told deputies with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office that they were with Taylor Smith when she reportedly suffered an asthma attack. Rather than attempting to help her at the time, the station learned that her friends attempted to bring her back to life the next morning by placing her in a cold shower.
When that failed to revive Smith, the group decided to leave her body on the side of the road. One member of the group did think to call 911, however, which allowed police to track down the people responsible for abandoning Smith’s body.
Those involved in the case – and those who knew the victim – are hoping to see justice delivered to those who did not do more to help Smith.
“In 19, 20 years, I’ve never heard of anyone doing such a thing,” Lt. Smith told WSB-TV. “So, yeah, I think they should be prosecuted. I think they should pay for what they did to her.”
