HOUSTON, Texas — Prairie View A&M University opened the season with a 37-13 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday night to claim the 29th Labor Day Classic at the BBVA Compass Stadium.
PVAMU (1-0, 1-0 SWAC) broke open a close game with 17 unanswered points in the second half. The Panthers led 13-10 after the first quarter and held the Tigers scoreless in the second half of the Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup.
The Panthers racked up 488 total yards while TSU (0-1, 0-1 SWAC) finished with 260.
Both teams had scored touchdowns on its opening drive. Prairie View quarterback Jerry Lovelocke completed 30-of-39 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown.
Courtney Brown rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and Gabe Dunlap led all players with eight receptions for 52 yards.
Raheem Cardwell led PVAMU’s defense with 9.5 tackles with James Bryant and Brock Newton each recording a sack.
Early in the first quarter, Prairie View muffed a punt that TSU recovered at the Panthers’ 10-yard line. TSU settled for a field goal after it couldn’t score from the 2-yard line. After TSU tied the game at 13 with a field goal late in the second quarter, Prairie View fumbled the ensuing kickoff.
Two plays later, TSU quarterback Homer Causey fumbled to give Prairie View the ball back. Prairie View then took a 20-13 lead after a touchdown with 54 seconds remaining. On the following drive, Causey threw an interception from inside the Panthers’ 10-yard line.
Prairie View took control in the second half, outscoring TSU 17-0 to control the game.
