Ga. NAACP Launching Voting Rights Campaign

ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia State Conference NAACP is launching a campaign to restore sections of the Voting Rights Act that have been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

NAACP fficials said in a statement that launching the initiative, titled “Operation Restore” was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech Wednesday.

NAACP leaders say the nation’s high court striking down portions of the legislation is an aggressive act of voter suppression.

Part of the Voting Rights Act required states with a history of voter discrimination, including Georgia, to have proposed changes to their elections processes approved by federal officials.

NAACP leaders were planning to visit Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and hold a press conference outside his office Wednesday afternoon.
