Prosecution Expected To Rest In Ga. Baby Killing

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — The prosecution is expected to rest Tuesday in the trial of a man accused of fatally shooting a baby as he sat in his stroller in coastal Georgia.

DeMarquise  Elkins is charged with murder in the March 21 killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in Brunswick.

Prosecutors say Antonio was killed in an attempted robbery and that ballistics and other evidence implicate Elkins. The baby’s mother, Sherry West, was wounded in the shooting.

Prosecutors said Monday they expected to wrap up their case Tuesday. Then the defense will begin presenting testimony and evidence.

The trial is being held in Marietta because of pretrial publicity.

If convicted, 18-year-old Elkins faces up to life in prison. His mother is on trial alongside him on charges of evidence tampering and lying to police.
