Ex-Ga. Federal Worker Guilty In Extortion Scheme
ATLANTA (AP) — Federal prosecutors say an ex-federal employee has pleaded guilty to extorting Social Security recipients.
Authorities said Tuesday that 46-year-old Cordell Fleming of Conyers worked as a Social Security Administration claims representative and processed payments for eligible recipients.
Investigators say Fleming offered to expedite processing times for Social Security recipients in exchange for a fee.
Officials say Fleming either extorted or tried to extort between $500 and $1,800 from at least nine recipients between October 2012 and April 2013.
Authorities say Fleming was charged with extortion on Aug. 14. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Officials say he’s scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 14.
