Man Arrested In Shooting Near Underground Atlanta
ATLANTA (AP) — Police say they’ve apprehended a suspect in the shooting death of a man near Underground Atlanta, a downtown shopping and entertainment complex.
Brandon Barnes, 25, of Stone Mountain faces a murder charge and was being held in the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta police Officer John Chafee said early Tuesday. Jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.
The man who was killed was shot several times during a dispute with another person Monday afternoon, and was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital. Chafee said the victim and the suspect argued inside the shopping complex before the dispute escalated to gunfire once they were outside.
Investigators had been speaking with Barnes to determine whether he was involved and eventually obtained probable cause for a murder charge, Chafee said.
The shooting was at least the second slaying to happen near the complex in less than a year. On Dec. 11, a man was shot and killed at Underground Atlanta after an argument escalated and ended in gunfire.
The shooting was also the second fatal shooting in or near downtown Atlanta during the day on Monday. A man was shot to death while pumping gas at a Chevron station just southwest of downtown around noon on Monday. Police were still searching for a suspect in that case.
