ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – The crowded field of Republicans vying for an open U.S. Senate seat in Georgia is growing, with businessman David Perdue announcing plans to run.

Perdue is the cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue and is touting his experience in the private sector as the former CEO of Dollar General and Reebok. Perdue made the announcement Wednesday in a video on his campaign website, saying the federal government is out of control and a different kind of person is needed in Washington.

Perdue joins U.S. Reps. Paul Broun of Athens, Phil Gingrey of Marietta and Jack Kingston of Savannah — as well as former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel — as candidates in the Republican primary.

Earlier this week, Michelle Nunn became the first high-profile Democrat to enter the race.
