After the shooting of Trayvon Martin, which many believe was racially motivated, race has been brought to the forefront again. In a nation that is considered the ‘melting pot’ of cultures and races, many like to think racism is a thing of the past. But, it is hard to accept that when black men are constantly racially profiled, just as Trayvon Martin was profiled by George Zimmerman. Labeled as thugs, criminals, gang members, black men are given the short of the stick on a daily basis. In 2011 in New York City, under their Stop-and-Frisk policy, over 600,000 people were stopped by police, under suspicion, and frisked for drugs, paraphernalia, or firearms. The majority of those stopped and frisked were minorities, and most of them were found innocent. The majority of those in the American prison system for drugs are minorities as well. So, there is a pattern here.  It is proven that black people are as likely to use drugs as white people, yet more black people are in prison. Could it be that police or those in authority target those of color, consciously or not?

On today’s Power Talk with Lorraine, we discussed if we will ever see a post-racial America and what can we do to remove racial stereotypes.

Also, we discussed an Ohio political action committee’s plan to raise money in order to furnish George Zimmerman with a firearm. They believe that he needs protection and has the right to own a firearm since the Department of Justice is withholding the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin for evidence.

What do you think of this situation? One caller responded to this stating that the black community should fight fire with fire and supply young black men with guns, give them permits and teach them proper handling.

Another event involving Zimmerman occurred where he rescued a family in Florida from the wreckage of their car accident. Many callers speculated that this event is staged or fake, to make Zimmerman look better. What is your take on this?
