ATLANTA (WAOK)-Plans for the location of the new Falcons Stadium may have to be revamped if a deal isn’t made soon. Friendship Baptist Church has rejected the city’s $15.5 million dollar offer, and is repeatedly asking for more than $24 million.
The city’s chief operating officer wrote a letter to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, recommending a minor redesign at the preferred southern site that would leave the 151-year-old church intact. Other options are to build the stadium on the north side of the Georgia Dome.
The two have been in negotiation since late April. The city’s first offer to Friendship Baptist was for $13.5 million, which was also rejected.
Negotiations continue with the second church that must be torn down to make way for the new stadium. State officials are negotiating with owners of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
