Mo Ivory: How I Got Clean
I had to get clean. I had no choice.
I was heavy, bloated, tired, sluggish, sore and not feeling good.
My clothes were tight; my shoes too.
My skin was irritated and so was I.
I needed to change my habits because those habits were affecting EVERYTHING.
So, I went on a 21-day cleanse, and the results have been amazing!
Here’s how it all started: I recently switched positions here at CBS Radio and I now have to wake up at 3:30 a.m. .
It’s an understatement for me to say I was struggling. Imagine a brick keeps hitting you in the head at the same time someone is dragging you out of the bed, but your physically still sleeping and your brain hurts – literally hurts – trying to wake up all your senses.
That’s how I felt EVERY morning. I would stand in the shower and cry, real tears (not water from the shower rolling down my cheeks). I wondered if I was really made for this type of regimen.
It didn’t help that I drank five cups of coffee per day, took 5-Hour Energy shots like I was at Happy Hour, and didn’t alter my diet of sugar, meat and bad carbohydrates to any degree.
I always felt like I needed a nap – because I did!
Needless to say, again, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted and needed more energy, needed to feel lighter and more clear, wanted to look better in my clothes.
Honestly, weight loss was on my mind, but getting healthy was my definite priority.
I decided to go on a 21-day cleanse consisting of a vegan diet for 5 days (no dairy, no caffeine, no alcohol, no meat, no sugar), followed by 10 days of pure juicing (no hard food) ending in a slow transition back to the vegan diet and other foods that are healthy.
Sound tough? IT IS.
Days 1-3 were pure hell. I had not gone 72 hours without a single cup of coffee since I was stranded on a deserted island in Brazil at a yoga retreat from hell that I volunteered to go on with my best girlfriend in the late ’90s.
I was so irritable on that trip, I wasn’t sure I would survive 21 days. Each of those first days I went downstairs to the Starbucks just to inhale the aroma – it was THAT bad.
But luckily the owner of the store I buy my products from made me a concoction of something made with cocoa nibs that magically helped me get through it.
Day 4 was MUCH better. In fact, I started believing I was going to make it all the way.
Today, is Day 17. I am feeling energized, healthy and lighter – THIRTEEN pounds down! And my dresses fit well, again!
I am going to stay on a vegan diet for as long as I can. I am not drinking coffee anymore and I plan to severely limit my alcohol intake to special occasions two or three times a year.
I feel too good to go back.
My daughter has even adopted some of the habits I am displaying around our home, and she is getting healthier too. That’s the best part of the cleanse.
So when the alarm clock rings at 3:30 a.m., I’m up, refreshed and ready to take on the world.
