ATLANTA (AP) — A metro Atlanta man has been sentenced to life in prison in the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy.

Fulton County District Attorney’s spokeswoman Yvette Jones says 38-year-old Tommy Collins was convicted and sentenced Thursday in the New Year’s 2011 death of Ruben Hand.

Authorities say after the peach drop celebration in downtown Atlanta, surveillance footage shows Collins following Hand into the Five Points MARTA station. Authorities say the teen was later stabbed in his neck.

Jones says Collins confessed to a friend and asked him to dispose of the bloody clothes he was wearing that night — which police recovered after acting on a tip.

Collins told investigators he stabbed the teen because he thought Hand and his friends were the same group who robbed him earlier that night.
