Man Accused Of Trying To Expand Drug Cartel In Ga.
ATLANTA (AP) — U.S. Marshals say a man accused of trying to build a drug cartel between Atlanta and Houston has been arrested.
Spokesman Gavin Duffy says Douglas Waindel, who was arrested Wednesday morning, was wanted on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to launder monetary instruments.
Duffy says Waindel — who has no criminal history — was sent from Texas to establish a drug trafficking hub in the metro Atlanta area. Duffy says authorities began investigating Waindel in mid-March.
Waindel was taken into custody at a condominium in Buckhead without incident. Duffy says the man was found with 22 pounds of suspected cocaine and $200,000.
In late-March, Jeffrey Cofield — a Baltimore fugitive suspected of trying to expand a drug operation — was also arrested at a Buckhead condominium.
