For baseball fans like me, Opening Day serves as a symbol of rebirth. The occasion represents a newness or a chance to forget last season, in that the 30 major league clubs and their millions of fans begin with 0–0 records. The details of the game last night …Freddie Freeman drove in three runs with three hits, including the first of three Atlanta home runs Monday night, and the Braves beat Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies 7-5 on opening day.Dan Uggla and Justin Upton, making his Braves debut, also homered for Atlanta, which led National League teams with 49 in spring training. Which leads me to say that the Braves for the 1st time sin 2003 will have 6 players with at least 20 home runs this season! Freddie Freeman,Jason Heyward,Dan Uggla, BJ Upton, Justin Upton and Brian McCann when he gets back will all hit over 20 homers apiece this season. In 2003 the Braves won 101 games, and this line-up is better. You heard me!
The Braves brought out some of their past stars for pre-game ceremonies. Dale Murphy was the honorary captain, newly retired Chipper Jones threw out the first pitch, Phil Niekro was handed a microphone and yelled “Play ball!” Even the great former Braves manager Bobby Cox was in the house.
Freeman led the Braves with seven home runs in spring training. Uggla led off the second inning with the Braves’ second homer into the left-field seats. Justin Upton added a line-drive homer to left-center in the fifth.
If chicks dig the long ball, then there are going to be a lot of ladies in attendance this season for the Brave games because these guys are going to Rake!
