Gaps In Security Cited At Grady High School

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Public Schools officials say there are gaps in security at a high school where a gun discharged this week.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that school officials discussed security at Grady High School and related challenges posed by its “open campus” environment during a Thursday meeting with parents.

Police say a 17-year-old student shot herself outside Grady Wednesday and faces charges that include reckless conduct.

Officials say they believe the girl was able to circumvent the school’s metal detectors by entering the school through a gymnasium door opened by two students. The shooting happened later, outside on the school campus.

The school system’s director of safety and security, Marquenta Sands, said the fact that students can move back and forth to their cars “is an issue we must address.”
