We talked basketball and more with Dikembe Mutumbo, future hall of famer and member of the Hawks “Team of the 90’s”. Dikembe talked about the ONE time that Michael Jordan dunked on him, the current Hawks team, and more. He also talked about his wildly successful Geico Super Bowl ad. “Everyone is doing that to me now (the finger wag in his commercial),” said Mutombo. “I was inspired to have great success in the league by (Hall of Famer) Bill Russell. He told me to rebound and block shots.” (about his finger wagging after blocked shots) – “I got fined a lot for that. I told them, “man cannot fly in the House of Mutombo!”
We also talked to Dikembe about his charity and humanitarian efforts. (about his hospital effort in the Congo) – “I wanted to always practice medicine and after playing basketball when I came to the States, I want to make a difference. I thought the hospital would be a great way of giving back to my community. It means a lot to me. My mother died because she could not get to a hospital in time to save her life.”
When asked who is the most memorable politician he’s met: “Being in the White House with President (Barack) Obama, was a dream come true. I told my son you don’t have to follow in my footsteps, you were born here and you can be President if you want to.
We also had him say his full name, which is a bit of a tongue twister.
He also helped judge a Dikembe impersonation contest, prompting one caller’s daughter to ask “why the Cookie Monster was on the radio.”
