LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (CBS Atlanta) — An Alabama high school football coach has been suspended without pay for 10 days for making derogatory comments about Michelle Obama and homosexuals.
WHNT-TV reports the Lauderdale County Board of Education punished Bob Grisham for saying that the first lady has a “fat butt” and that being gay is an “abomination against God” during a psychology class at the Lauderdale County High School.
“You can go tell the principal, you can call the superintendent and tell her. I don’t believe in queers, I don’t like queers,” Grisham said in an audio recording that has gone viral, according to WHNT. “I don’t, I don’t hate them as a person, but what they do is wrong. It’s an abomination against God.”
In the recording, Grisham also railed against Michelle Obama and her healthy lunch initiative.
“Look at her. She looks like she weighs 185 or 190 (pounds). She’s overweight,” Grisham said, according to The TimesDaily.
James Robinson, a spokesman for GLBT Advocacy and Youth Services, says that Grisham needs to be fired.
“This is wrong, unethical, unprofessional, on so many levels, that there should be no question that if it is verified that this happened in a classroom, that this teacher should be removed from his position,” Robinson told WAAY-TV.
The board ruled to keep Grisham on staff but he will no longer be allowed to teach psychology.
