Paper, Plastics Fuel Fire At Abandoned Warehouse

ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – Firefighters were putting out hotspots at an abandoned warehouse that caught fire near the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, sending thick smoke into the neighborhood.

Atlanta fire Battalion Chief James McLemore says the fire began at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday and was burning through deeply imbedded paper, plastics and other combustibles. Firefighters were still working to put out hotspots early Monday morning.

The abandoned metal warehouse on Mayson Turner Road was once used for recycling and used to be the site of the Thickett & Brown mop factory. Officials say the building was inoperable due to an earlier fire in 2011.

There were no reports of any injuries, and it wasn’t known early Monday what caused the blaze.
