BUCKHEAD – (WAOK/AJC) Construction crews spent all day Wednesday trying to dismantle the holiday tree that sat atop the Macy’s Department Store at the Lenox Square Mall in Buckhead. As teams tried to remove it from the roof, Wednesday, the crane broke, causing the 60 foot pine tree to break, and fall, leaving it dangling over the side of the building. The mishap, damaged the roof of the store, causing management to close the store for the day until they could clean up the mess left behind. The tree created a big hole in the ceiling and sent water and other debris falling inside. Management had planned to re-open the store Wednesday afternoon, but then changed those plans, when it was realized that the damage was heavier than first realized. The store was not open, when the crane broke, sending the tree, falling partially through the roof. Sources say it could take several days to clean it all up. The giant tree lighting has become a holiday tradition that starts on Thanksgiving, and remains a part of the Buckhead landscape, through New Year’s Day.
