ATLANTA (WAOK)-Over one hundred thousand people are expected to ring in the New Year at Atlanta’s Underground. Police officials advise everyone to take MARTA to get to your downtown destination. Last trains will depart Five Points rail station at 2 a.m. to get you back home safely.

Several events are taking place in downtown Atlanta including the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome, and Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta.

MARTA officials say on New Year’s Eve, bus service will operate a regular weekday schedule.  Some bus routes will be rerouted for both the Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade and Peach Drop.  Beginning at 4 p.m., buses serving Five Points will be rerouted to other stations through the end of regular service.

Fare is only $2.50 each way (plus a $1 charge for a permanent Breeze card). For added convenience, customers are encouraged to purchase round-trip fare at the start of their trip to avoid long lines on the return.

On New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2013, MARTA officials say bus and rail service will operate using a Sunday schedule in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Bus service will run from 5 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., and trains will operate every 20 minutes on all lines from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Some bus routes will be changed to accommodate the anticipated crowds for events like the Chic-Fil-A bowl and the Peach Drop. Check the MARTA website for more information.
