ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – Atlanta may have the peach drop, but New Year’s revelers in Macon have their own gimmick for ringing in 2013 — the cherry blossom ball drop.

The Monday night event in downtown Macon is geared toward families, with a fireworks display starting at 9 p.m. to accommodate those who want to get their children in bed before midnight.

Officials say there will be a larger fireworks finale to coincide with the dropping of the cherry blossom ball at midnight.

Sean Pritchard, program coordinator for Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival, says the brightly lit pink ball is made of actual cherry blossoms and takes about 30 seconds to drop.
