Atlanta Braves Exercise Contract Option on Manager Fredi Gonzalez
Nashville, Tenn. – Atlanta Braves Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren announced today at Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings that the Club has exercised its one-year option on the contract of manager Fredi Gonzalez, who is now signed through the 2014 season. Wren also announced four additional moves within the Baseball Operations Department.
Gonzalez, 48, was hired by the Braves on October 13, 2010, and became the Club’s 16th manager since the organization moved to Atlanta in 1966. He owns a 183-141 (.565) record in two years at the helm of the Braves and is 459-420 (.522) in six seasons as a big-league skipper. Gonzalez went 276-279 in four seasons with the Florida (Miami) Marlins from 2007 to 2010.
“Fredi did a terrific job of leading our team back to the playoffs in 2012,” Wren said. “We feel with his leadership our team will continue to challenge for championships in the future.”
In 2012, Gonzalez guided the Braves to a 94-68 (.580) record and the top Wild Card spot in the National League. He was named the Sporting News National League Manager of the Year in 2008 after guiding the Marlins to an 84-77 record in his second year as manager.
The Braves have made two new hires, as Dave Holliday and Brad Sloan have each been named as Special Assistant to the General Manager/Major League Scout. Holliday, who spent the previous 19 seasons as a Special Assistant with the Colorado Rockies, will cover the American League. Sloan spent the last nine years as a major league scout with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after serving as scouting director for the San Diego Padres for six seasons.
The Braves promoted Dom Chiti to the position of Special Assistant to the General Manager/Pitching Development and Special Assignment. Chiti enters his fifth season with the Braves and served the last four as a Special Assistant to the G.M./Major League Scout.
Special Assistant to the General Manager/Major League Scout Jeff Wren will now cover the National League. The 2013 season will be Wren’s sixth with the Braves.
