ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – State leaders and Georgia Public Broadcasting have launched a new program intended to improve student performance in science, math and related subjects.

It’s a 16-part video series designed to tie science and math concepts to careers in engineering and technology. Students will see physics in action at a zip line course at North Georgia Canopy Tours. They’ll see Newton’s Second Law of Motion at Atlanta Motorsports Park.

Georgia students generally trail the national average in math and science test scores. The new program is part of the state’s STEM emphasis to counter that trend. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

The initiative is involves a rare partnership between Gov. Nathan Deal and state Superintendent John Barge. The two Republicans have been at odds on education policy.
