Champion Family Rejects FAMU’s Offer To Settle Lawsuit

TALLAHASSEE – (WAOK/AJC)  –  The parents of Robert Champion Jr.,  are not happy with Florida A&M University’s  offer to end their lawsuit.   Attorney Chris Chestnut,  says the Champions are insulted that the university offered the Champions $300,000 dollars to settle the suit,  the couple filed against the university,   following their son’s death last year.   The Champions blame the historically black institution for not doing enough to stop the culture of hazing that took their son’s life.  He died,  after being beaten during a hazing ritual while the band was performing in Orlando,  Florida,   in November of 2011.   Since the incident,  11 members of the Marching 100 have been charged with death by hazing,   a felony.   One band member already pleaded no contest in the case.    The band has been suspended from performing,  indefinitely.    The offer was the largest amount the school could offer,   without state approval.
