ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta)- A new study has found that elementary school children are concerned about their appearance in bathing suits.

Researchers at All Hallows College in Dublin found kids as young as five years old felt they were too fat to wear a swimsuit, the website School Days learned.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, childhood obesity has tripled over the course of the past 30 years. However, regardless of health or shape, children are all the same reportedly showing signs of self-consciousness about their bodies at increasingly younger ages.

The study was said to be conducted in an effort to determine the effects of a parent’s obsession with weight on their children.

“When children and young people hear so much talk about diet and weight loss, that can be taken up negatively,” Dr. Deirdre Cowman was quoted as saying by School Days in relation to the study. “They can internalize this and the need to lose weight is greater.”

Cowman reportedly added that an emphasis on weight loss in the home could contribute to childhood depression.
