DETROIT (AP)— For the first time since 1966, there has been back-to-back shutouts tossed in the World Series.

The San Francisco Giants got yet another strong starting pitching performance and blanked Detroit 2-0 in Game 3 of the World Series to take a commanding three games-to-none lead over the Tigers.

The Giants can wrap up their second World Series title in three years with a victory tonight in Detroit. San Francisco has won six straight postseason games.

Ryan Vogelsong blanked the Tigers through his five and two-thirds innings. He was aided by two double plays. Vogelsong got out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fifth, inducing Miguel Cabrera to pop out to end the threat.

Vogelsong is 3-0 in the postseason. He’s only the third pitcher to make four straight starts in a single postseason in which he allowed no more than one run, giving up five hits in 5 2-3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum (LINZ’-ih-kuhm) pitched two and a-third innings of hitless relief, striking out three. Sergio Romo closed out the five-hit shutout. It’s the first time since the Baltimore Orioles threw three straight shutouts in 1966 that there have been back-to-back shutouts thrown in the Series. The Giants blanked the Tigers 2-0 on Thursday as well.

The Tigers have now been blanked three times in the postseason. They were shut out just twice in the 162-game regular season.

The Giants scored both their runs in the second inning. Gregor Blanco plated the first run with an RBI triple that scored Hunter Pence. Brandon Crawford’s RBI single drove in Blanco with the second run off Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez.

Game 4 will be played at Comerica Park tonight. It’s a battle of a pair of 16-game winners in the regular season: Max Scherzer tries to save the season for the Tigers against the Giants’ Matt Cain.
