MACON, Ga. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former Georgia sheriff has pleaded guilty to assaulting an inmate and conspiring to cover up the assault.

Prosecutors announced Monday that former Wilcox County Sheriff Stacy Bloodsworth pleaded guilty. Bloodsworth’s son, Austin, also pleaded guilty to conspiring to cover up the assault.

Three other people had already pleaded guilty to charges related to the July 2009 assault.

Stacy Bloodsworth said he ordered three inmates out of their cells, hit all three inmates and watched as other people kicked and hit one of the inmates in the face.

The former sheriff faces a maximum of 10 years on a civil rights charge, and a maximum of five years on a conspiracy charge. Austin Bloodsworth faces a maximum of five years on the conspiracy charge.
