DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — A man has been found guilty of murder after claiming he fatally shot two DeKalb County police officers in self-defense in 2008.
The DeKalb County District Attorney’s office says William Woodard was found guilty Friday in the deaths of officers Eric Barker and Ricky Bryant.
Prosecutors say the officers, who were working as off-duty security officers, were approaching a car when Woodard got out and began shooting.
Woodard said that he wrestled a gun away from one of the officers and fired upon them in self-defense. The defense says Woodard was defending himself because he was being beaten by them.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Woodard. The date of sentencing for Woodard hasn’t been set yet.
Woodard is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before his is sentenced.
