QUITMAN, Ga. (AP) — A former Brooks County sheriff has been sentenced to just over a year in prison for stealing money from the county.

U.S. Attorney Michael J. Moore says 59-year-old Richard Chafin was sentenced Wednesday to one year and a month in prison for embezzling from programs receiving federal funds.

Chafin will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.

Investigators say Chafin stole at least $63,000 from the south Georgia county jail’s commissary fund while he was sheriff. He had served as sheriff from 1987 until 2008.

The GBI says it began investigating in early 2009 at the request of the district attorney when county audits found discrepancies in accounts.
