College Park, Ga (WAOK)-Beginning next fall students and staff at the elite Woodward Academy will have to pass random drug tests. School officials say their goal is to test 40 percent of the 1000 students in grades 9 thru 12 as well as teachers and administrators.
School leaders say while they have seen no evidence of drug use on the campus they are concerned about surveys that show high school drug use is growing at private schools.
Parents pay as much as $20,000 per year for students to attend Woodward Academy.
So far about a half dozen parents at Woodward have questioned the policy but other parents seem to agree with the practice. One parent said she thinks the policy will help students deal with the peer pressure to use drugs.
Other private schools like Lovett and Padeia said they prefer to stress drug education over drug testing.
