MARIETTA – (WAOK/AJC) – 35 year old Waseem Daker represented himself in the 3 week murder trial in Cobb county, but in the end a jury didn’t buy his argument, and found him guilty of the 17 year old murder of former flight attendant, Karmen Smith. Prosecutors contend Daker, strangled Smith, in 19-95, and stabbed her then 5-year old son in their Marietta home, as revenge for his obsession with Smith’s roommate. Smith’s son Nick, who is now 22 years old, survived and testified during the trial. Investigators say Daker was always a suspect in the killing, but say they couldn’t connect him to the crime until new DNA testing made a match in 20-09. Under Georgia law, Daker must be sentenced under the laws in place when the crime was committed, which will not include the death penalty.
