ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – State labor officials say that the preliminary unemployment rate in metro Atlanta dropped to 8.9 percent in August.
That’s down from 9.2 percent in July.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced the new figure Thursday morning.
Labor officials say the rate decreased because there were 1,547 fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services, educational services, and health care and social assistance. Also, the metro labor force declined by 23,505, partly because some students left summer jobs to return to school.
Metro Athens had the lowest jobless rate among Georgia metro areas at 6.7 percent.
The local area unemployment figures are not seasonally adjusted.
