ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) - Neighborhood groups in Atlanta are mobilizing to protest a rezoning proposal that would enable a Walmart store to open in the city’s Buckhead neighborhood.
Officials say opponents of the project spent the weekend sending email messages to Atlanta City Council members, who were scheduled to discuss the issue at a meeting Monday.
The proposal would rezone 21 acres to allow more commercial development near the city’s Lindbergh MARTA mass-transit station.
Tom Shepherd of the Garden Hills Civic Association says allowing a Walmart store would threaten to turn the area into a “traffic pit.” But his neighbor, Dave Henry, says he doesn’t understand why people are protesting a proposed Walmart when the area already has Target and Home Depot stores.
