Army Investigators Trying To Identify Decomposed Body
FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) — U.S. Army investigators are working to confirm the identity of a decomposed body that washed ashore onto Fort Benning from a creek that flows into the Chattahoochee River.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the body was found Saturday.
Agents from the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division believe the man is a civilian with no Department of Defense affiliation and there is no indication that he was a soldier.
Heath Taylor, the sheriff in nearby Russell County, Ala., said Fort Benning authorities had a possible name.
Fort Benning officials they’re working closely with federal, state and local authorities to verify the man’s identity.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Authorities in Columbus and in Russell County were asked to check outstanding cases for missing persons.
