A mother and her 11-month-old son drowned in the Chattahoochee River in Columbus, authorities said.

A 3-year-old boy was also taken to a hospital after the Sunday afternoon drownings, police say.

The family was fishing on the bank at Rigdon Park and the 3-year-old went into the water, Columbus Police Lt. Lynn Joiner told The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (http://bit.ly/QtUzRQ ).

The mother, holding her baby, went in to get him and all three went under the water, police said.

Chrystal Brown, 30, was pronounced dead at 4:07 p.m., Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower said. Her son Mister Brown was pronounced dead at 4:26 p.m. at The Medical Center.

The 3-year-old boy’s condition was not immediately known on Monday.

The 3-year-old went in a shallow area, but there was a drop-off where water became as deep as 15 feet, police said.

Police said the father, who can’t swim, sent other family members to get help.

Police were called, and three officers went into the water to search for the three. Later, divers from the Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services brought them up.
