ATLANTA (AJC/WAOK) – Christian Taylor won the Olympic triple jump gold medal Thursday night, beating U.S. teammate Will Claye with his fourth jump in the final.

Taylor attended Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Georgia. He continued his season-leading form with a best jump of 17.81 meters (58 feet, 5 ¼ inches). Claye won the silver medal with a jump of 17.62 meters; Italy’s Frabizio Donato took the bronze.

Taylor is the world champion for outdoor track and field and Claye is the world champion for indoor.

While at Sandy Creek High School, Taylor was the Georgia record holder in the long jump, triple jump, and 400 meters. He was also selected as the 2008 Gatorade Athlete of the Year for the state of Georgia.
