ATLANTA – A maintenance man working on a roof at Atlanta’s downtown Marriott Marquis Hotel,  on Peachtree Center Avenue,  was struck by lightning when a heavy storm moved through the city Thursday afternoon.   The man was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital,  but his condition was not known.    Strong storms produced heavy rain,  strong winds and lightning,  which struck several houses in Cobb county. At least two house fires were reported in Cobb County but no injuries were reported. Homes in Kennesaw and Powder Springs were hit about two hours apart.

In Clayton County a police officer was injured when his patrol car hydroplaned in standing water and sent his vehicle crashing into a tree. His injuries are believed to be relatively minor.

In Forsyth and Gwinnett County lightning also struck home and knocked out power to the Forsyth County 9-1-1 center temporarily.
