Drug Trafficking Operation Shutdown

DOUGLAS COUNTY-  (WAOK/AJC)  – Drug Enforcement agents say they have taken down a drug trafficking operation,   that originated in Mexico and ran drugs to Atlanta and other cities.  A senior agent with Atlanta’s DEA office says the drug net,   which started about a year ago, has resulted in 35 arrests,  and the confiscation of more than 140 pounds of cocaine,  seven pounds of methamphetamine and othre drugs,   as well as more than 3 million dollars in cash.   Harry Sommers said the latest operation, which was carried out Aug. 1 and included law enforcement from Cobb and Douglas counties,  resulted in the arrest of the Atlanta cell leader, Adan Macedo-Rios, and 14 other suspects.  Sommers says the operation was based in Mexico,  but had large operations in Peru and Ecuador.   “We destroyed them root and stem,” Sommers said. “This organization, at least domestically, is no longer going to be functional in our community.”
