AUGUSTA, Ga. (CBS Atlanta) — Georgia authorities say a man bet his friends to light his head on fire at a bar.

According to multiple reports, 36-year-old William Bonner had his friends pour a high-concentrated alcohol shot on his head and light him on fire at Allie Katz Bar and Grill in Augusta last Thursday.

“I’ve seen a lot of things,” Bryan Birmingham, owner of the bar, told WFXG-TV. “But never something like that.”

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said this was done all over a bet.

“The man who was set on fire bet his friends that he was drinking with that he could set his face on fire,” Lt. Blaise Dresser told WJBF-TV. “Obviously no one believed him and he proved them wrong.”

Patrons at the bar couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

“It was the longest 10 seconds you could think of,” eyewitness Adam Harden told WFXG. “All of us just stopped.”

Bonner’s friends immediately drove him to Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center. He was later airlifted to Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital.

WJBF reports Bonner was released from the hospital Monday after being in critical condition for a few days. Dresser told the station no charges will be filed against Bonner.
