DeKalb School Board Postpones Vote On Teacher Layoffs…Again
DECATUR – (WAOK/AJC) - DeKalb school board members voted on Monday against laying off teachers, saying they would prefer to find other ways to clear up a nearly 85-million dollar deficit. On a vote of 5-2, board members opted not to layoff some 300 teachers, as recommended by school superintendent, Cheryl Atkinson. The board was prepared, last week, to give the go ahead to the budget savings plan, that also includes increasing class size, but couldn’t agree on how to make teachers part of the equation. The board did agree to increase property taxes in Dekalb county to generate about 15 million dollars, directed towards the school district, but it appears for now the teacher layoffs are not part of the solution.
