Changes To Jury Selection Process To Begin July 1

ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – Changes in the way juries are selected go into effect July 1, part of an overhaul of Georgia’s jury system.

Officials say Georgia has been the only state in the nation that requires “forced balancing” of jury pools. That has meant that local jury commissions created pools in attempts to make sure they were not skewed according to gender or race.

That process has meant that court clerks had to remove some individuals because of their age, sex and race.

Officials say the new statewide jury selection process is designed to eliminate any opportunity for discrimination on any grounds. It is a result of changes in state law and Georgia Supreme Court rules adopted after concerns that the current system was unconstitutional.
