ATLANTA – (WAOK/AJC) - Fulton county jail personnel, are offering inmates rewards if they can pick the new locks just installed at the jail. Those who succeed will be given free food and toiletries from the jail commissary. It’s a contest with the new locks on just nine cells, after a long battle to get a secure lock system in place at the jail, which has been under federal observation for several years, after inmates sued the county over unsafe conditions and overcrowding in the jail. The locks were routinely compromised, allowing inmates to escape their cells and wander among the open area, putting jail personnel in danger, but not the general public. The Fulton county sheriff has asked for 6 million dollars to replace all the locks inside the jail, but until a decision is made on the request, specially fit locks for the test run on 9 jail cells is in place to see how well they work.
