ATLANTA (WAOK)-If you ever wanted to read a “feel good” story, look no further. Fred Dukes recently graduated from Atlanta’s Booker T. Washington High School with a 3.3 GPA and scored a 25 on his college entrance exam. That in itself is not a phenomenal feat until you also understand that Dukes was homeless for the last two years of high school, living in Atlanta with no family. Dukes relied on friends from high school to give him a place to stay, food to eat and the only stability in his life.
Not one time however, did Fred Dukes forget the goal-to graduate from high school. Many young people use anything as an excuse to drop out of school. Fred Dukes however, did exactly the opposite. No matter how difficult the road, whether he had a place to stay or not. Fred got up went to school and did his best.
Now he is on his way to Coker College in South Carolina with a feeling of accomplishment but also knowing that his business is not finished.
Fred Dukes visited WAOK and V-103 today to share his story as he embarks on the next step in his goal, to achieve his MBA.
That’s where you come in. Fred Dukes has never asked for anything but a chance to get an education so he can be successful. D and K Suit City has provided a $3,000 wardrobe to Dukes and owner Justin Karam says for every dollar donated to the “Send Fred to College” fund at D and K, he will match the funds up to $5,000.
There are excerpts of the conversation Dukes had with WAOK’s Derrick Boazman on “Too Much Truth”page.
There are several ways you can help Fred Dukes go to college.
